The guest speaker for the May meeting of the Castlemaine Field Naturalists Club (CFNC) is Les Hanrahan. Les is a specialist on the fungi of the Ballarat area and surrounds, and his talk will be on this topic. The evening starts from 7.30pm at the hall behind the Uniting Church on Lyttleton St, Castlemaine (Friday 9 May 2014). Members and visitors are very welcome.
Les is also a committee member of the Ballarat Field Naturalists Club, and has organised with George Broadway for a joint fungi-hunt excursion with both the Castlemaine and Ballarat clubs. The excursion is to occur on Saturday 7 June in the Blackwood area. Meet at “The Octopus” building on Duke St in Castlemaine for a 9.15am departure to join Ballarat Field Nats at the Garden of St Erth’s car park 10.30 am. Bring lunch. Finish about 3.00pm (OK if need to leave earlier).
The May excursion of the CFNC is to occur on Saturday 17 May. The aim of the excursion is to conduct surveys for the elusive Swift Parrot (and for the even more elusive Regent Honeyeater). Meet at “The Octopus” building on Duke St for a 9.00am departure and to finish around midday. These mainland surveys are organised twice annually by Birdlife Australia (the next is on the first weekend in August). A copy of the datasheet is attached (click here). Further information from Birdlife Australia about the surveys and about past findings is available from their website (click here).
